Archery Gizmos and Gadgets

By Tracy Breen

I have always been a “gizmo and gadget” type of guy. I cannot resist new gizmos that I can put on my bow to eliminate vibration. Every bow company has some type of anti-vibration module that helps cancel out the vibration the bow creates. Once bow companies started the trend of eliminating vibration, an amazing number of companies started creating gadgets that help eliminate vibration.

First, Sims Laboratories introduced a whole slew of products to cancel out vibration. Bow stabilizers now have anti-vibration modules built into them. What archers get in return is a new gizmo to add to their bows which make them even quieter.

Vibration modules have now been added to bow sights. This is a great feature for archers. I have had more than one sight vibrate so much that people could hear it if they were standing off to the side of me. Even worse, I have seen nuts and bolts come loose over time on the sight due to vibration. Adding anti-vibration gizmos to sights was a great idea.

Anti-vibration modules in bow quivers came next which has helped the overall quietness of bows. It doesn’t matter how quiet a bow is. If the quiver attached to the bow makes a lot of noise, the whole bow sounds noisy. In fact, some quiver makers like Bohning make quivers that are almost all rubber. The quiver stays silent and the rubber quiver helps cancel vibration from the bow. When these components are added together, the result is a bow that is whisper quiet. Most bows today are far quieter than bows that were made ten years ago.

I must admit at this point in the game that I thought I had seen it all when it came to anti-vibration modules in anything related to archery gear, but I was wrong. Carbon Impact now offers an arrow called the Stealth with a built-in stabilizer. Just like a stabilizer on a bow cancels out vibration, the built-in stabilizer in the arrow helps cancel out the vibration in the arrow as it is launched from the bow.

share a storyIf you have ever seen an arrow being launched from a bow, you will notice it flies uncontrollably for awhile before it straightens and hits the target. The built-in stabilizer in the Stealth shaft cancels out the vibration creating an arrow that recovers from the launch quicker and flies more accurate so I end up being more accurate. Just when I thought we were done seeing new anti-vibration gizmos on archery products, Carbon Impact developed the arrow stabilizer! It is a great idea and great product to round out my archery setup. Technology has come a long way in the last few decades. With all of the new gear on the market, it is amazing any deer makes it through the archery season.

The editor of God’s Great Outdoors’ Internet Outdoor Magazine, Tracy Breen, has lived his entire life in Muskegon, Michigan. He was brought up in a family full of hunters and trappers and he grew to love outdoor adventures at an early age. Tracy’s father trapped for a living during the late 70's until the fur market fell apart in the early 80's. At that point, he took up taxidermy which he still does for a living today. Due to that influence growing up, Tracy decided early on that one way or another he would make a living in the outdoors. Also, being brought up in a home with a Christian foundation, Tracy wanted to somehow tie the two together, but was unsure how this could happen. It was by God’s grace and in His perfect timing that Tracy contacted Gerry Caillouet about a magazine idea. Tracy’s project was to be in print, while Gerry had been praying for someone who could help God’s Great Outdoors by editing and running the Internet Outdoor Magazine idea he had in the back of his mind for several years. After many weeks of prayer with his pastor and others, Tracy Breen accepted the offer to become a part of God’s Great Outdoors as the new Internet Outdoor Magazine editor.

Besides the time outdoors, God has used another aspect of Tracy’s life to prepare him to serve in this position with God’s Great Outdoors. Tracy states, “Something else that has made me the way I am is the fact that I have a mild case of cerebral palsy. This has always affected the way I walk and I have had to learn to hunt and trap somewhat differently at times because of my disability. Although it can get me down because I can't walk through the marsh the way I would like to or be as quiet as I would like in the woods, I get by and realize that many have it a lot worse. I am extremely excited about the opportunity God has given me to serve in this way by putting this magazine together. Hopefully I will also be able to use my disability to help others with similar problems; proving that a disability can't stop you from enjoying the outdoors if you put your mind to it!”

Tracy and his wife Angie have been married since August of 1999
